Background:

Northgate Primary was founded in 1839 and moved to the Cricklefield Lane site in 1960. An expansion to two-form entry in 1998 saw the opening of five new classrooms, an dining room, new small hall and an extension to the original hall. The school has an archive of documents and records illustrating events in the history of Northgate and the local area. In addition to curricular sports, Key Stage 2 children take part in inter-house competitions in netball, rounders, football, cricket, athletics and swimming. The extra-curricular programme caters for French, recorders, computers, chess, drama, various sports, instrumental groups and choirs. Northgate pupils won National Educational Multimedia Awards in 1995 and 1996 for designing and producing software called Bones and Awesome Alphabet. The school received a Hertfordshire Garden Trust Award and has been involved in a number of projects including the Hertfordshire Internet Project, Teachers Portable Computers, the Oxford Reading Tree and the Hertfordshire and Essex Newspaper Passport Reading project. Northgate is a member of the National Council for Educational Technology Focus Network of Schools and participated in the Hertfordshire Music Festival at the Albert Hall. A group of children were involved in the making of a television programme at the Henry Moore Foundation and one pupil won a prize from a local bookshop for his poem on National Poetry Day. Charity fundraising has recently supported the Turkish Earthquake appeal, Children in Need, the Poppy Appeal and a mission for the homeless in London. The school is oversubscribed.
