Background:

Our Lady School is a Voluntary Aided Roman Catholic School in the North Division of Hertfordshire County Council and within the Diocese of Westminster. It caters children between the ages of five to 11 years. Founded in 1903, four Sisters from the French order of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, settled in York Road in Hitchin. 1906, Sister Eleanor opened the Parish School, with a group of only three girls, in the front room of 16 Nightingale Road, a small cottage near the church. The number of pupils increased over the years and the school was transferred to a corrugated iron hut which stood beside the church. In 1924 the Sisters moved to a new convent in Verulam Road and the Parish Priest bought their property in Nightingale Road. It had the potential space and facilities to be used for the combined purposes of School, Parish Hall and Presbytery. After the war, numbers rapidly increased and, by 1960, there were five classes in the school. The new school building in Old Hale Way opened after the Easter holidays in 1967 with 180 pupils on roll.
