Background:
Abel Smith School is a primary and nursery school for boys and girls. The age range of the pupils is four to 11. The building situated alongside the car park entrance (which was largely demolished in 1975) houses a Food Technology area and the after-school club. On the same site there was also a Memorial School for girls, which in 1861 became Abel Smith Junior Mixed School. This is still standing and is affectionately known as the 'old building'. In 1968 the Faudel Phillips Infant School and the Abel Smith Junior School combined to form the Abel Smith Junior Mixed and Infant School. A full history of the school, written by Miss Dorothy Abel Smith, is available from the school office. The school provides a wide range of extra-curricular clubs includes: football, netball, rounders, cross-country and tennis.
