Background:
St Meryl School was built in 1951 and is situated on a large attractive site in Carpenders Park. The name of the school does not in fact come from a religious affiliation, but from the builder's daughter, whose name was Meryl. It has a wide range of facilities including a separate playground with climbing frames for each Key Stage, grass areas, a large hall with stage and separate dining room. The school curriculum has core subjects including mathematics, English, the national literacy strategy, reading, handwriting, science, information and communication technology and foundation subjects including history, geography, music, art, design technology and physical education. Specialist teaching is catered for with a kiln room, a children's cooking area and a science resource area and each class has its own computer equipment. Every year, pupils raise money for charity. The school aims to provide a calm, caring and stimulating environment.
