Background:

The school was opened in 1970 as Ward Freman School and changed its name to Freman College in September 1999. The college enjoys well-equipped specialist facilities. The principal block, dating from 1971, houses the administration wing, resources, gymnasium, dining area and many teaching areas. Recently, there has been considerable expansion, with new facilities for English, mathematics, art, music and sixth form. The swimming pool is shared with the local community. School trips range from Moscow, France and Italy to Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and geography field trips. There are also frequent visits to theatres and art galleries. The college was awarded specialist status in humanities jointly with its two partner middle schools in September 2005. It leads a school sports partnership covering the Buntingford and Royston area and offers a wide range of sports activities and fixtures. There are annual house drama and music competitions organised entirely by senior students in each of the four houses. The college aims to excel in teaching and learning, and inspire all who study and work at the college to enable them to achieve the very best of which they are capable. It offers each individual the opportunity to discover and develop their personal skills and talents and to develop in all members of the college a strong sense of community and responsibility towards others within the local, national and global communities as well as the college community.
