Background:

Richard Hale, a London merchant, founded a grammar school in 1617. Richard Hale, for many centuries Hertford's only secondary school, has played an important part in the history of the town. The school moved to its present building in 1930 with regular extensions to accommodate the increasing number of pupils at the school. In 1998, a new music block, housing a performance area and a suite of practice rooms, was completed. The school'still maintains its original traditions, striving to widen the horizons of its pupils. The school has recently become a Science College and has also become a Microsoft Academy at which local people and businesses can develop their ICT skills. There is an increasing number of extra-curricular clubs, including chess, Christian union, computers, cross-country, debating, design and technology, small games and library. Music, art and drama are particularly highly valued at the school. The school is proud of its sporting tradition. Rugby and basketball are the main sports in the autumn term, football and basketball in the spring term and cricket and athletics in the summer term. Children demonstrate their awareness through their active involvement in various charitable and fund raising events throughout the year. The school aims to create a learning environment in which all boys will be able to develop their intellectual and personal abilities.
