Background:

Birchwood is a rapidly growing, mixed comprehensive school with the additional benefits of being a Technology Specialist College. Technology college status has assisted the school in the provision of further resources. These include a computer based technology centre, a well resourced library, a specialist music block with five practice rooms, recording and music studios, a refurbished business suite, four open- access computer rooms linked to the whole school network, a self contained sixth form and conference centre, a drama studio, a scantek laboratory, a refurbished and re-equipped science area and a refurbished mathematics block with a specialist computer room. The school offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities ranging from science, technology, art and mathematics clubs to musical and theatrical opportunities. Students can take part in a diverse spread of competitive sports. As a national Sportsmark school, rugby, football, netball, hockey, athletics and cricket are coached and competed to a high standard. The school has also forged excellent links with the community and many students have been involved in working on local projects, working with primary schools and raising money for a variety of charities. The school aims to encourage its students not only to do their best academically, but also to develop and mature as sensible and tolerant members of its community.
