Background:

Housed in listed buildings of exceptional quality dating back to 1850; set in spacious landscaped grounds that include full-size floodlit and all-weather sports surface. Thriving day and boarding community offers distinctive high-quality education with a strong international dimension, in addition to extensive extra-curricular activities. Regarded as the model of a modern European school. Hockerill is the only maintained boarding school in the country offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma; this was studied by all sixth-form pupils from September 2005. The Key Stage 3 curriculum is modelled on the IB Middle Years programme. The school is proud of its strong international dimension and innovative curriculum, which includes an internationally-acclaimed bilingual section. Recent developments include two state-of-the-art language laboratories, an extensive computer network, an information and communications centre, the Millennium Suite of class and seminar rooms. Boarding accommodation has been continuously upgraded and new junior boarding houses opened for boys (1998) and girls (2000). Boarding at Hockerill is of 'exceptionally good value' since only the boarding costs need to be covered by the fees. Since acquiring self-governing status in 1994, there has been strong demand for day places from surrounding areas. Applications are welcomed from all those who feel they will benefit from and can contribute to the continuing development of the college. Day places are partly allocated on the basis of a language aptitude test, boarding places on the basis of an interview and reports from previous schools. Over-subscribed, with seven applications per place. Specialist language college status. Artsmark Silver (2004); Investor in People status (1998); DfES achievement award (2001, 2003); training school status (2000). Ethos: 'The school aims to produce people who are good with people and people who want to and are capable of operating across international, linguistic and cultural boundaries'.
