Background:
Monskmead opened as an infant school in 1958. It was built on farming land at a time when the local population was growing rapidly and the post-war baby boom had increased the demand for school places. The classrooms are very spacious and light. The interior of the building has been extensively modernised with new libraries, a small group teaching room, re-designed cookery areas, physical education equipment, and music area and staff room. In 2000 the school system in Borehamwood was re-organised to two tiers and Monksmead was extensively developed to become a Primary school for children from ages 3 to 11. All children cover the national curriculum requirements in English, mathematics, science, history, geography, technology, art, music and physical education. Religious education is also taught. The school has many lunchtime, after-school and weekend clubs, which are open to children in Key Stage 1 and 2. The school has achieved the following awards: Investors in people award; DfEE schools achievement award for excellence in education in 1999/2000 and 2001/2002. The school aims to create a caring environment where its pupils feel valued and develop a lifelong love of learning.
