Background:
The school was founded in 1958 in two buildings on the edge of farmland, but describes itself as urban, being situated close to the M25. Although most pupils are drawn from Hertfordshire, others come from a number of neighbouring London boroughs, and the result is a student body with a very wide range of socio-economic circumstances. There are over 10 per cent of children for whom English is not their first language, and the number of children with special educational needs is above the national average. The staff strive to support the individual progress of every child and parental support is welcomed and nurtured through the Parent-Teacher Association. The pleasant school grounds comprise playing fields, football pitches, netball courts and an ecology area with pond. Excellent facilities include specialist rooms for music, maths, science and technology, and computer systems for every class. Children join one of four houses, with trophies awarded weekly to the tidiest and best-behaved. Sports and the creative arts are a strong tradition at Oakmere and the range of extra-curricular activities is comprehensive, with children encouraged to join the orchestra or choir, play in netball or football squads, or participate in weekly swimming lessons. These activities are balanced with the first hand experience that pupils gain from educational visits further afield. Links with the community are strong, and a system of mutual support means the school welcomes local organisations to use their buildings. Children are encouraged to raise funds for a variety of charities during the school year. The school's policy is to promote positive attitudes to todays society.
