Background:
Saint Mary's Catholic School was founded in 1896 by the Sisters of St Mary of Namur, as an independent convent school. It became a state voluntary aided comprehensive in 1976, and became co-educational at the same time. The school was originally four-form entry school. It has expanded to five-forms of entry in recent years due to the demand for places. It became a specialist Performing Arts College in 2003. Old buildings of the school are now being gradually replaced with modern facilities. The school aims be an academic and caring community founded on its Roman Catholic ethos.
