Background:

Popular rural school in attractive village in east Hertfordshire; views across the Ash valley; oldest buildings date from Tudor times, with some Victorian buildings; further accommodation built in 1974, 1997 and 2000; purpose-built computer suite in 2001; extensive accommodation housed in three main buildings, including two libraries and a nursery class. Over-subscribed. Large areas outside for sport and recreation: grass, asphalt and two purpose-built areas of timber play apparatus on safety surfaces. Conservation area attracts wildlife and provides valuable study area. Broad and balanced curriculum augmented with extra-curricular activities: drama, netball and football; pupils also have opportunity to learn brass and wind instruments, for which there is a club associated with St Andrew's Church. Charity fundraising is a joint cooperation between parents and pupils, notably for the NSPCC, RSPCA and Lifeline Romania. Termly workshops and visits linked to children's studies; also workshops in design and technology, and science; visits to theatres, concerts and galleries. Before-school care, with breakfast club open from 8am. DfES achievement award (2000).
