Background:

Though now housed in a modern building, St Nicholas is still set on the edge of ancient woodlands where it was founded in 1834. The location reflects the school's belief in providing 'a special Christian vision and identity based upon centuries of this country's rich Anglican heritage'. It also aims to foster self-confidence, respect for others, and creativity. Pupils with special educational needs are grouped together in class, and taught 'the attitudes, skills and knowledge necessary for independence and happiness', while gifted pupils are given challenges to extend their abilities, again in a group matching their ability. The curriculum lays an emphasis on English, maths, science and music, which they aim to match to the progress of each child. This is complemented by numerous extra-curricular activities in music, languages and art. Pupils also 'enjoy many sporting activities', and all years have swimming lessons. Each year during Lent, children are encouraged to raise money for a charity of their choice, and they develop 'pride and responsibility' for their town through various community projects. The Parent-Teacher Association organises social events and fund raising for the school. In addition to a daily act of worship, there is a service every July to bless those children leaving the school.
