Background:

Founded by the church in 1853; Christian ethos continues to underly everything it does; housed in a building that combines mixture of Victorian, 1970s and 1990s architecture, stands on edge of a 200-acre local common 500 metres from the M25. The school has a one-form entry at nursery age; most children come from 'comfortably off' homes. School enjoys support from parents and governors; strengths include pastoral care, discipline and teaching of basic skills; school attributes success to 'mutually supportive and intellectually-stimulating team'. The school also supports fundraising by pupils, with a charities day held annually. Links with local community include support from the local specialist language college secondary school; French taught from Year 5; science and ICT suppport from a local company. Children with special educational needs are supported by a teacher working 2.5 days a week to provide small-group teaching; Extra teaching staff enable group teaching in literacy and numeracy in Key Stage 2 and small-group teaching for phonics and spelling in Key Stage 1. Links with local secondary schools with perforiming arts/visual arts specialist status enhance opportunities for children. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place.
