Background:
Opened in 1951, South Hill occupies a single story building in a 'very pleasant' parkland site adjacent to the town centre. The school is 'light and airy', making the maximum use of glass, and its 'far-sighted' design won a number of architectural awards and is still considered a landmark in school design. It has eight classrooms and is a 'formal, traditional' school committed to high standards in work and sport. South Hill is fortunate to have a playing field and two hard play areas on-site. In winter, part of the grassed area is used as an official junior sized football pitch whilst in summer a cricket square, rounders markings and athletics track are substituted. A special needs co-ordinator helps each child develop their 'full potential'. The school aims to be 'a learning partnership' in 'close cooperation' with parents. Teaching staff give their own time to provide lunch-time or after-school activity clubs including netball, football, Fish (Christian), gardening, drama, pottery and orchestra. A private frim, Norman Education, offers brass and woodwind tuition for pupils on a fee paying basis. The school is oversubscribed and receives three applications for every place.
