Background:
St Dominic Roman Catholic Primary School has been providing Catholic education in Harpenden since arrival of Dominican Order in 1920; present school built from Domincan resources in 1964, when it became voluntary aided. Set in beautiful grounds including a section of old Harpenden woodland where a rare plant thrives. Over-subscribed, with 1.5 applications per place. After-school activities enrich curriculum; teachers generous with their time at lunch times and after-school to hear readers, talk over learning and give extra tuition in music and sports. The school values arts highly; each child has two opportunities each year to take part in a school production such as a play, musical or video. It has held two literary forums hosted by television and radio presenter Mark Lawson, adult audiences of teachers, librarians, advisors, sixth formers and parents have packed the school to hear writers such as Andrew Davies, Jan Mark, Pat Hutchins, Kevin Crossley-Holland and Sophie Hannah. The school aims to provide an environment in which children feel safe, secure and respected.
