Background:
Ashfield Junior School is a two-form entry junior school which has recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. As established by the original trustees, the school has no religious affiliation and was founded in 1845 for the 'education of the poor children of Bushey'. Some of the original classrooms are still used for Year 6 pupils and the entire school is built in different styles upon six levels in 'the most beautiful grounds'. The school is 'noted' for its academic achievement and art, drama and sports involvement by all pupils. The 150th anniversary very much involved the local community, with which the school has forged strong links, especially the Bushey Museum and the Bushey Festival. Children take part in league football and netball, chess competitions, inclusive drama and 'generally consider the whole breadth and balance of the curriculum'.
