Background:

Ickleford School is situated in the 'attractive' village of Ickleford, which is close to Hitchin. The school was founded in 1839 and is housed in a Grade II listed building dating from 1848, with a patterned tile roof, bell tower and brick and flint walls. The school has been extended over the years to incorporate the original schoolhouse, and provides several 'spacious' classrooms, hall, dining room and library with computer suite. It is set in 'extensive' grounds with many trees, shrubs and flowers and offers an outdoor heated swimming pool, conservation area and football pitch. Maypole dancing takes place on the front lawn. Ickleford School has an 'excellent reputation' for music. There is a 'thriving' orchestra and the school choir performs locally and has also performed in the Royal Albert Hall. Lessons are available on many instruments and the school has an orchestra. Sporting links are 'strong'; the school football and netball team play in regular matches, and there are many other extra-curricular activities. The school offers a wide range of opportunities to help each child to find his or her strength. The school aims to provide a happy, secure and stimulating environment, which challenges and encourages each child to achieve to the best of his or her individual ability.
