Background:

The Abbey Primary School is a happy, successful and popular Voluntary Aided Church of England Primary School, situated near to St Albans Cathedral and the town centre. There are 228 children on roll, organised into seven classes. The teaching staff currently comprises nine full-time teachers, including the headteacher and two part-time teachers. It also has several classroom and learning support assistants. The building was completed in 1970 and consists of a semi open-plan infant unit with three distinct areas for each class on different levels, two linked classrooms for Years 3 and 4, two separate classrooms for Years 5 and 6, quiet areas for small group work, a fiction and non-fiction library, a large hall, a staffroom, a small teaching/practical room and resources area. The installation of an ICT suite is planned for later this year. There are two playgrounds, an extensive grass area, a pond and an ancient tunnel to the Abbey. The Abbey orchard is used for games lessons and the football club.
