Background:
The Leventhorpe School founded in 1965. It is located on the edge of the small market town of Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire. The school is organised into a number of smaller, more easily managed units. Inside these each student's personal and academic growth is closely monitored. The school has playing fields and an indoor swimming pool. In addition, plans are progressing to establish a new sports centre and to develop other sporting facilities in conjunction with the Sawbridgeworth sports association. The technology department has recently been refurbished. The school owns 19 acres of sports field and recreation areas and shares an on site swimming pool and weights room. It has three dedicated ICT rooms and six additional suites of computers in other subject areas. Extra-curricular sports include football, rugby, cricket, hockey, netball, rounders, basketball, swimming, tennis, athletics, gymnastics and dance. The school organises many trips and visits including skiing, netball tour, foreign language home-stays, annual sailing camp and visits to theatre, concerts and bowling. Other extra-curricular activities include D of E award and the World Challenge. The school was awarded Business and Enterprise Specialist Status in September 2004. Uniquely, all pupils take GCSE Business and Communication Studies as an additional qualification in year nine. Early entry to GCSE and AS levels are encouraged, especially in ICT or Business. Triple science (physics, chemistry and biology) is taken by around 20 per cent of pupils. Charity work is prolific, with sixth formers running an annual 'charities week' in addition to the numerous other charitable activities organised by the school. Links are developing with a school in Ghana. The school'seeks to foster mutual respect between pupils, staff and parents. It aims to encourage its pupils to achieve examination success and to reach the highest possible standards in all they do. The school upholds traditional standards of courtesy and behaviour.
