Background:
Founded in 1953, The Russell School serves the local community of Chorleywood, and has 'good transport links' by tube, rail and motorway. It has a nursery standing in its own self contained grounds, eight classrooms, together with additional resource rooms, two halls and a stage, a heated indoor swimming pool and a 'well stocked' library. The outdoor facilities are 'excellent' and include a large tarmac playground, a small playground for infants, and an 'extensive' grassed sports field including a wildlife area. The school offers a range of extra-curricular activites which include football, netball, rugby, cricket, athletics, volleyball, badminton, short tennis, judo, swimming and athletics. The netball team has been Rickmansworth schools netball champions for the last three years, and the school mixed team were semi-finalists at the Hertfordshire tag rugby festival. It also offers a 40 piece orchestra which performed at the Royal Festival Hall in April 1999, and 69 per cent of juniors have a weekly music lesson. The school offers three residential visits a year, to Ashridge, PGL Thomley Hall and Normandy, France.
